With regular car inspections and routine emissions checks, drivers can be made aware of any problems with their vehicles. In case your car failed to pass the inspection or the emissions test, you will know it requires some immediate attention and potentially some repair work. Car owners should proceed with the repair work as soon as possible because it might jeopardize the reliability of the vehicle and even cause substantial penalties and even an invalidated registration. Therefore, it is highly recommended to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified professional at the very least every six months to avoid all these troubles. Some commonly asked questions on vehicle inspection are described below.

What is On-Board Diagnostics?

The OBD or On-Board Diagnostics, or OBD II is a standardized computer system carried out in all automobiles created in and after 1996. In short, all the automobiles made in 1996 and after will certainly have an OBD system in them, which offers information records on self-diagnosis of the car frequently utilized by automobile technicians prior to executing any type of vehicle repairs.

What Are The Most Common Causes Of a Failed Emissions Test?

A car emissions examination can fail for several reasons due to malfunctioning car parts such as an injector, oxygen sensor, ignition system or even an EVAP system. One of the most typical reasons is faulty injectors. Either the injectors or a malfunctioning oxygen sensor can set off a “abundant air-fuel blend” bring about a disappointing emissions test.

If your automobile has damaged ignition system, there is a higher possibility that it may be the root cause of a boost in exhaust emissions. This, subsequently, can result in a failed emissions examination.

Any kind of issue or deficiencies in the EVAP system or evaporative emission control system can trigger a problem in the handling of the gas vapor released from the car causing atmospheric pollution.

If your automobile hasn’t undergone regular maintenance and the “check engine” light is lit up on the dashboard, your automobile may fail the emissions test.

What Do They Check for in a Car Inspection?

A licensed inspector carries out a car examination at state-approved examination stations only. This is what they will check for:

  • Front lights: headlamps check to make sure of proper operation, no cracked lenses or lights, lights are the right color, are identical, and turn signals are operable.
  • Tail lights: Turn signals, marker lights, hazard lights, license plate lights, brake lights, reverse lights are operable, and no damaged taillights
  • Wheels and Tires: to inspect tire conditions for any signs of deterioration and if there is a requirement for replacement
  • Mirrors: Ensure no mirrors are cracked, damaged or missing
  • Safety belt: to evaluate seat belts’ condition and ensure they are safely working or require a replacement
  • Brakes: a comprehensive brake inspection to ensure proper brake response and if there is any brake fluid leakages
  • Horn: ensure the horn is operative
  • Evaluation of suspension and shock absorbers

How Long Does A Safety Inspection Take?

Depending on the state, city, and region where the car tests are carried out, the car safety inspection duration might differ. Nonetheless, for most cars, this process usually takes an hour to an hour and a half.
